Department of Preschool and Primary Education

Who Are We?

The Preschool and Primary Education Department mostly focuses on the preparation of teachers for kindergartens and teachers at the first level of elementary school. The Department guarantees a bachelor study programme in Kindergarten Education, both in the full-time and combined form, a master study programme in Education for the 1st to 5th Grade of Elementary School, both in full-time and combined form, and master study programme in Education for the 1st to 5th Grade of Elementary School and Special Education in both forms of study.

The Department is a guarantor of the doctoral study programme in Didactics of Primary Science Education (Ph.D.) The doctoral study programme is drafted as preparation for research personnel capable of contributing to the development of theory and research in a specific domain of primary science education through their own creative activity.

Selected programmes offer international students subjects taught in English. In particular, these include courses in mathematics, environmental education and the didactics of technical education. You can find more information at the Department’s Erasmus website or from the Department Coordinator, Mgr. Alena Tošovská. The Department also teaches Czech to students who study at JEPU within the Erasmus programme. There is an intense Czech language course before the semester starts and a course that runs during the semester.

The research orientation of the Department’s members is varied (list of Department’s publications). They focus both on basic and applied research in the field of education provided to children at the preschool and younger school age and their teachers. We offer research and project cooperation in the topics studied by our Department to international partners. This mainly includes:

  • Environmental literacy and its aspects in preschool and primary education
  • Possibilities of the evaluation of environmental education and education for sustainability
  • Metacognitive knowledge of students in mathematics
  • Use of digital technologies in teaching mathematics
  • Mathematical self-efficacy as a significant factor influencing teaching mathematics

At present, the Department participates in two international projects within Erasmus +: Science Starts at School and Take Me Out II.

The Department publishes a professional reviewed magazine, the On-line Journal of Primary and Preschool Education, registered in the Erih+ database.
