Postgraduate programme – Music theory and education

The postgraduate music theory and education programme has been part of the Department of Music Education PF UJEP study programmes since 1998. The music theory and education programme aims to train researchers capable of creative research in the field of music education and music theory in the entire breadth of this field, including the various forms of music education, with the application of historical, systemic as well as up to date aspects and in the links between the relevant musicological and educational disciplines. The programme of the study is mainly a continuation of the Master’s programmes preparing music educators for primary and secondary schools and after-school programmes. Still, it is also open to students of Master’s programmes in Musicology or Music Arts from other types of universities. Students in the doctoral program contribute significantly to the research, educational and artistic activities of the Department of Music Education. Postgraduate students of the programme take advantage of the opportunity to participate in mobility abroad within the Erasmus+ programme and benefit from the rich international contacts of the department with foreign entities.

Department of Music Education

The Department greatly emphasises offering quality undergraduate studies (Single major, double major combinations of Teacher Studies and Music Education for the Helping Professions). Students can continue in these not only with a Master’s double major but also with a postgraduate programme.

The department’s activities primarily focus on art, musicology, and scientific research. Choirs hold the dominant position in the artistic field (Girls’ Chamber Choir of PF UJEP, Chorea Academica, NONA) because choir singing has a deep-rooted tradition at our Music Education Department.

The department members are predominately profiled in the artistic field, including choirmasters of choirs successful both nationally and internationally. The department members cooperate closely with music departments in Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the USA, etc.)

One of the Department of Music Education’s significant activities is undoubtedly the publication of the professional journal ARA MUSICA, which focuses on music theory, history, interpretative criticism, and, above all, music education. The journal includes new compositions, choir arrangements, transcriptions, and repertoire arrangements that are well-used and popular, especially in school settings.

The Department of Music Education, as a department with a solid professional background, organises regular international symposia on choir singing Cantus chorales, which have so far been attended by dozens of choirmasters, educators, and students, both local and from many countries of Europe and the USA. The Department also annually sponsors a competitive festival of choir music, “Jirovský písňovar” (the Jirkov Song brewery).

Postgraduate programme of Art Education theory

We interlink the art education field with research approaches. We guide students to implement their ideas to be led in their studies by leading experts so they can submit grant projects, which help them realise their projects, and we strongly support abroad internships. We encourage collaboration and an open, discursive and reflective environment. We direct our students to acquire excellent knowledge and expertise in Art Education and related disciplines depending on the focus of their dissertation projects. Students carry out their own theoretical, scientific and research activity in the scientific and artistic environment of university departments or the environment of primary and secondary schools or after-school programmes, in institutions of art popularisation, galleries, as well as social and special institutions or in an art environment.

Department of Art Culture

We are here for students who are connected to visual art, like to create, go to exhibitions, but also do not imagine their lives as solitary ones, enveloped in their creations. They need contact with others, are happy to spend time with both children and adults and enjoy organisation and communication.

Getting in touch with students is essential to us. Creativity can be cultivated based on a good relationship between a teacher and a pupil, which creates a space for the most critical learning and understanding. We encourage our students to be active, exhibit their semestral work, come up with their own projects for The Annual Department Head’s Award, go on field trips with us, and see the most up-to-date things happening in the art world. At the same time, we want them to explore the cultural history and treasures of national and world galleries and museums.

We do our best to ensure annual exhibitions of the best student-produced work in a prestigious gallery. We also showcase Bachelor’s and Master’s works – BPDP for the public. At least once an academic year, we go on a field trip abroad (Paris, München, Kassel, Köln, Amsterdam, Vienna, Dresden etc.). We support students on international mobilities. We invite interesting personalities of the art world, theoreticians, art educators or other experts for lectures. We support the research projects of our PhD students, which bring interesting events and opportunities for undergraduate or graduate students.

While studying at the Department of Art Culture, you can, of course, embark on an international internship, which is an irreplaceable source of experience. To see the universities with which we have Erasmus+ agreements, click this link to see a map.

Theory of education in linguistic Bohemistics

PhDr. František Čajka, Ph.D.
1) Diachronic component in contemporary Czech dictionaries as a didactic problem
The thesis is based on the material of (contemporary) Czech dictionaries written after 1945. Attention is paid to the registration or the interpretation of those linguistic elements whose diachronic nature is not given sufficient attention in synchronic dictionaries (especially in the morphological description of Czech). Thus, the extension (scope) and intention (focus) of the interpretation of the relevant topics concerning the rest of the text of the dictionaries are monitored. Systematisation of the relevant interpretations processed in the dictionaries on a diachronic basis (determination of potential places of interpretation/topics/thematic areas, etc.) and a proposal for their new processing are a part of the paper. The thesis aims to point out some of the more interpretationally impoverished places in Czech synchronic grammar and to show the possibilities of solutions. Thus, the paper oscillates between synchrony and diachrony, and in its manifestations and consequences of a general nature, it will contribute to a more straightforward perception of the description of the linguistic structure of contemporary Czech. (the topic can be specified based on agreement with the student)

2) Diachronic component in Czech language textbooks for primary and secondary schools as a didactic problem
The paper is based on the material from Czech language textbooks for primary and secondary schools. Attention is paid to the evidence of diachronic topics, which are part of the explanations in the textbooks of the Czech language for primary and secondary schools. The paper monitors the extension (scope) and intensity (focus) of the explanation of the specific topics concerning other explanatory parts of the textbooks. At the same time, it analyses the explanations for which diachronic nature is not usually given sufficient attention (for example, the description of morphology of the Czech language). The work includes systematising the relevant explanations with a diachronic basis (determining potential places of interpretation/themes, thematic areas) and a proposal for elaboration. The aim of the synchronic-diachronic work is thus to thematise and propose relevant complementary explanations that could help in didactic terms to facilitate a more straightforward perception of the study text. (the topic can be specified based on agreement with the student)

doc. Mgr. Patrik Mitter, Ph.D.

1) The place of Slovakian in Bohemistic education at all levels of education in the Czech Republic
The dissertation examines the representation, sharing and importance of knowledge about the Slovakian language, Slovak nation, culture and environment for education in the Czech language in primary, secondary and tertiary schools. The methodology of the thesis is based on the excerpts of Czech language textbooks for the individual grades and levels of schools (alternatively from the knowledge of study plans of university programmes), from the understanding of RVP (Framework Educational Programme) contents (alternatively of individual ŠVP (School Educational Programme), then from analysis of level or reception of Slovak in pupils of Czech primary school, students of secondary and tertiary schools and suggests possible solutions for the representation of these findings for school practice.

2) Study of proper names and their applications (not only) in teaching the Czech language
The dissertation examines the representation, sharing and importance of proper names in language education in primary and secondary schools. The methodology of the paper is based on a thorough excerpt of Czech language textbooks for different grades and levels of schools, on the knowledge of the content of the RVP (Framework Educational Programme) (alternatively of individual ŠVP (School Educational Programme) for the subject of Czech language, on the examination of the status and functioning of proper names in social communication and proposes possible solutions to increase the share of the above-mentioned curriculum in school practice.

3) Univerbization and its concept in Czech language books and textbooks

The dissertation examines the representation and significance of universalisation in contemporary Czech, its treatment in lexical and lexicographical descriptions of contemporary Czech, and the representation of its teaching in the Czech language in primary and secondary schools. The methodology of the work is based on a thorough excerpt of the universalisations represented in Czech language lexicons, explanatory and some special dictionaries of Czech lexis, as well as on the excerpt of Czech language textbooks for individual grades and levels of schools, on the knowledge of the content of the RVP (or individual ŠVP) for the subject of the Czech language. The thesis analyses the status and functioning of universalisations in social communication and, based on this analysis, proposes possible solutions to increase the share of the above-mentioned teaching in school practice (especially in Czech language teaching).

Theory of education in literary Bohemistics

doc. PhDr. Ondřej Hník, Ph.D.

1) Active grasp of selected literary education content in primary or secondary school (content and target group to be specified).

The paper has a theoretical and practical part, and the paper focuses on the practical part. The qualitative approach is in practice in primary or secondary schools (the target group specified by the PhD student), and activities for pupils/students are developed, tested, and didactically reflected on further specified educational content. Profound and comprehensive literary and academic content is preferred. The dissertation should advance established practice in defined educational content and theoretically reflect on the didactic or, more specifically, literary-didactics issues.

PhDr. Václav Jindráček, Ph.D.

1) Stereotypes in the approach of interpretation of poetry in literary education: research of quality of educative method 3A (case studies dependant on methods of annotation – analysis – alterations)

The dissertation highlights the risks of formalising poetry teaching in literary education. The 3A methodology, developed to standardize the procedure of creating didactic case studies, is a tool for research and reflection on educational situations. The dissertation research methods are based on annotation and so-called concept analysis of educational situations and offer food for thought about possible alternatives and improvements (alterations) of teaching.

Mgr. Jiří Koten, Ph.D.

1) The function of literary education in contemporary education
The proposed dissertation project is based on a research investigation (graduates of secondary schools/university students, secondary school students, teachers at secondary schools or other levels of school) aimed at awareness about functions and goals of literary education and education by literature. Contemporary education emphasises the knowledge of literary communication (its principles, structures and components). Still, according to the shared hypothesis, insufficient attention is paid to (continuous, systematic) clarification of the meaning of this knowledge. As a result, a pupil’s/student’s understanding of literature in school is not a tool of education but a part of the curriculum that needs to be done to meet the teacher’s requirements (alternatively of the examiner at the final or entrance exams). An analysis of the identified key competencies should complement the research. The researcher should strive to answer questions of to what extent a pupil/student understands the objectives and functions of literary education, whether the goals set by curricular documents are (always) adequate, to what extent literary education develops key competencies (civic, communicative, personal), for which the subject has the prerequisites, or to what extent is exhausted by the expected outcomes of literary communication. The doctoral student should also consider alternative goals of literary education that meet the needs of the 21st-century person or to which education through literature has natural prerequisites (literature as a memory institution, as a source of values, as a noetic tool for understanding individual or collective experience, for knowledge of other groups and other experiences, to reveal stereotypes, etc.)

2) The identity of a teacher of the Czech language – how do contemporary teachers identify with it, and how do they experience it

This dissertation project is intended as qualitative research – the doctoral student applies appropriate methods of inquiry to answer questions about how Czech teachers at the chosen level of schools experience their professional identity, based on which they identify with it and how it changes the experience of professional identity with time of practice, what Czech language teachers perceive as obstacles, how they develop in knowledge of the base field and didactic competences after graduation etc.

prof. PaedDr. Pavel Doulík, Ph.D.

1) Preconceptions and misconceptions in teaching Czech language and literature

Children’s conceptions or preconceptions (and their erroneous form concerning the current state of knowledge – misconceptions) are an essential element of every educational strategy that respects the individual differences of individual learners. Knowledge of those is critical to the educative process in all areas of education, including the Czech language and literature. The dissertation research is focused on identifying the level of children’s conceptions (preconceptions) and possibly their genesis. Either a qualitative or quantitative strategy can be chosen. The research instruments are based on the selected plan. The aim is to describe the level of preconceptions at the given age level and compare them with the current level of knowledge in the provided field. Thus, the main misconceptions should be identified, and their elimination is one of the goals of the educational process.

2) Psychodidactic aspects of the educational process in Czech language and literature
Brain-compatible learning, from which contemporary psycho-didactics stem, respects the individual characteristics of the learning individual in the educational process. It does not focus only on input and output, as seen in transmissive teaching (based on behavioural theories), but also on processes that take place in the learner’s brain. The dissertation research will focus on using psycho-didactic principles in the educational process and how teachers know, understand, and use them in their work. The aim could also be to design selected parts of the Czech language and literature curriculum per psycho-didactic principles (constructing knowledge and respecting pupils’ learning styles and preconceptions).

Didactics of Primary Science Education

Full-time as well as part-time studies
Annotation:

Postgraduate programme – Didactics of primary science education

The didactics of primary science education programmes are based on the intersection of professional science disciplines, integrated science education, primary school didactics, and pedagogical-psychological disciplines. The transdisciplinary and integrated nature of the theory of primary science education is underlined by its close relationship with educational disciplines, particularly environmental education and health and healthy lifestyle education. The main aim of studying this field is to deepen the existing knowledge in the field, specify and focus it on the area of primary science education, and, above all, to develop the concept of primary science education as an integrated, independent discipline requiring extensive knowledge of many scientific fields.

Department of Primary and Pre-primary Education

The Department of Primary and Pre-primary Education focuses on preparing pre-primary and lower primary school teachers. The department guarantees a bachelor’s Lower primary school teacher study programme in both full-time and part-time forms. At the same time, it participates in preparing lower primary school teachers and special education teachers in both forms of study.

In the programmes mentioned above, the staff of the department provides the university basics subjects (philosophy of education, ethical education, national history, the biology of a child and others), subject didactics (didactics of primary subjects, geography and natural science; gardening and practical activities and others), field subjects (sex education, health education and medical skills, exploration of nature and manipulation with natural materials, environmental education), and also applied pedagogical disciplines (primary and pre-primary education, didactics of primary and pre-primary education, communicative skills, personal and social education).

The department guarantees the postgraduate programme of Didactics of primary science education (PhD). The postgraduate programme is designed to prepare scientists capable of enriching the theory and research in the specific domain of primary science education through independent research.

As for scientific research, the department’s priority is to focus on elementary and applied research in the field of education of children of pre-primary and lower primary school age. The results are periodically presented at national and international conferences and in Czech and foreign scientific journals.

The department issues a peer-reviewed Education Support journal.

Children’s ideas and their resistance to change
Children come to a certain intuitive knowledge of the world and their place in it before they start attending an educational institution. This intuitive knowledge is referred to by various terms, e.g. childhood ideas, naive theories, preconceptions, etc. Children’s ideas resist change, which occurs only under certain conditions. The aim of the research will be to determine the presence and form of children’s conceptions about a selected topic in science education. The core research sample will be lower primary school pupils. Findings will be compared with older age cohorts to identify conceptual change.

The factors influencing avoidance of specific groups of animals and their transformation with regard to age
In many cases, children have an unjustified negative attitude towards various, especially unpopular animals. The negative perception could have arisen in various ways, for example, through direct interaction or mediated through various channels such as media, relatives, friends, educational institutions, etc. But the above phenomenon may also have an evolutionary basis. The main objective of the research will be to identify the factors that influence the avoidance behaviour of primary school students towards selected animal groups The findings will be compared with older age cohorts.

Identification of preconceptions and misconceptions through analysis of children’s drawings
There are several ways to identify children’s preconceptions and misconceptions. One functional way is through children’s drawing. Children use drawing to depict the world around them and express their feelings and thoughts; often, dreams or fantasies appear in the picture. The analysis of the created drawings should be complemented by a conversation that makes the children’s ideas more concrete. The aim of the research will be to identify children’s ideas about the selected science education topic through this research technique.
